British/Irish Marriages

MARRIAGE BETWEEN BRITISH AND IRISH CITIZENS

 British citizens resident in England, Wales or Northern Ireland who apply to a Marriage Registrar for a Certificate of No Impediment for a marriage abroad with an Irish citizen must swear an affidavit.

 They must then follow an appropriate procedure for giving public notice of marriage, normally the publication of a suitable notice in a newspaper circulating in the district where the applicant has his usual residence.

 On production of evidence of compliance with that procedure, and once satisfied that the parties have the legal capacity to contract the proposed marriage, Consular Directorate authorises the consular Post in the district where the marriage is to take place to issue a Certificate of No Impediment.
