About Your Wedding
“MATRIMONIO DI TRANSITO” IN ITALY
1) A “matrimonio di transito” is a marriage between two foreigners neither of whom is resident in Italy. It has to be arranged in advance (normally 1 month) directly by the persons concerned or by a wedding co-ordinator with the local Comune (town hall) where they want to get married.
2) On arrival in Italy, the couple should go in person to the Comune or send the wedding co-ordinator to hand in their documents (Certificate of No impediment “Nulla Osta” issued by the Consulate plus passports) and to sign the official papers giving notice of their intention to marry. This has to be done a few days before the date fixed for the wedding. The exact timing ranges from 4 days to a week depending on the Town Hall: Sorrento & Ravello (4 days), Amalfi (6 days), Taormina (7 days).
3) Most Comuni celebrate marriages on weekdays only (Mon–Fri). Some charge a fee that should be confirmed with the Comune in question. Two witnesses are required but these can be found locally if necessary. If the couple do not speak fluent Italian they will have to arrange for an interpreter for when they go to the Comune (some Comuni can assist in finding one but again any arrangements should be made with them directly).
4) In order to get married in Southern Italy, Italian authorities require British citizens to produce a Certificate of No Impediment (Nulla Osta) which the Consulate issues.
In order to issue the Certificate of No Impediment we need the following documents:
• Original UK Certificate of No Impediment issued by local Registrar’s Office
• A photocopy of your passport
• Original British long birth certificate (showing parents’ names)
• Original divorce decree absolute in case of previous marriage N.B. According to Italian law a divorced woman cannot remarry before 300 days pass from the date of the decree absolute. (However, it is possible to apply for a dispensation through the “Tribunale Civile”. Further information should be obtained from the “Ufficio Matrimonio” of the “Anagrafe” of the Comune in the area where the marriage is to take place.
• If name on birth certificate differs from that on the passport, we require original deed poll showing change of name
• Consular fees of € 64.00 for each certificate + € 9.00 postage. If you pay by cash please use registered post. If you pay with an international money order, please make payable to “Consolato Britannico”, Napoli adding € 2.60 for bank charges. Please ensure that you send the correct amount otherwise your application could be delayed.
N.B. PLEASE ENSURE DOCUMENTS ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A COVER LETTER STATING DATE OF WEDDING, NAME OF WEDDING CO-ORDINATOR/AGENCY, AN ADDRESS WHERE CERTIFICATES SHOULD BE SENT AND CONTACT DETAILS FOR THE COUPLE IN THE UK.
